Team Coaches

DERYL DYSON BOYS HEAD COACH

A graduate of Huntington Beach High school in 1977 I played tennis for all 4 years.  Although I did not run either cross country or track I am quickly realizing the similarities.  Both sports are very individualistic, but overall success depends on the entire team.

My interest in cross country began in 2004 when my son Eric Dyson began running cross country for Fountain High School.  During his years in high school I attended clinics and observed Coach Baratti and the other Fountain Valley coaches.  As often as possible I would gather any information on the training techniques being used.  I did this not knowing that they would become useful at a later date.

After Eric graduated from high school I realized how much I enjoyed cross country.  It seemed the one way to stay involved was to begin coaching.  Not being a teacher I knew that this would not be an easy task.  That summer I began to inquire at various schools, but actually was hired by a contact made by my wife.  I think it is an interesting story and I have shared it with many, if you have not heard it ask me and I would be glad to share how I got started.

For the 2008 season I was an Assistant Coach at Santa Ana Valley High School.  Both the boys and girls teams were League Champions.

2009 is my first season as a head coach and first year at Fountain Valley High school.  I am looking forward to the challenge of working with and training the athletes involved in a program that has had tremendous success in previous years.

BRIAN BIVENS GIRLS HEAD COACH

My first experience in track and field was at Fountain Valley High School where I ran for four years while earning Captain and MVP awards. My senior year, we were Sunset League Champions on the men's side, finishing the year in CIF Finals.

I was a volunteer sprint coach at Edison High School for a season in the mid 1990's. Next, I was co-head coach for a season at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa training their cross country teams in I believe 1995. We made CIF with our girl's squad for the first time in school history, finishing behind a tough Orange Lutheran squad back when they were in the league. In 1999, I did my student teaching at Fountain Valley High School and was asked to come out and work with their sprinters. From 2000-2006, I was the head men's and women's cross country/ track and field coach at Kennedy High School. We competed in the State Championships for track and field in 2002 & 2004 & 2005. In 2004, my 4 x 100 meter relay team broke the all-time Orange County record running 46.54 FAT. That same year we were CIF Champions in the 4 x 100, 100, and the 4 x 400.

Early in my coaching career, I worked in several physical therapy clinics and was strongly influenced by John Horsley at Restor Physical Therapy. He taught me muscle balancing, stretching techniques, and allowed me to work "hands on" with several track Olympians from Europe, and a few pro basketball and baseball players. John Sayer, a former decathlon competitor, helped me understand periodization and the management of a multifaceted training program including power lifting. Mark Roche out of Coast Physical Therapy introduced me to plyometric training and its application in the pro beach volleyball scene. At Long Beach City College, I was greatly influenced by Coach Richardson, Coach Washington, Coach Elias, and of course Ron Allice. I followed Ron Allice to USC, where I continued to train and watch his system develop. Coach Goldman and Coach Wells at Cerritos College have most recently helped me refine the art of coaching track and cross country as part of their staff. We were the women's California JC State Champions in 2006.
