| Barons Mourn Passing of Former XC Coach Dan Moran |
08/16/2008 |
Fountain Valley Barons are sad to report the passing of former girls coach Dan Moran this past week due to continued health complications. Dan was the Barons head coach from 1988- 2000 and coached some of the best girls in Orange country such as Angie Winkler and Julie Allen before moving on to Santa Ana Valley. Coach Moran was an outstanding guy with a love for athletics and especially for FVHS, those who coached with him and against him will dearly miss him, he will always be a part of the Baron family. Funeral services are pending. Martin Baratti –FVHS XC

| Thanks to all parents and Boosters!! |
10/30/2007 |
A special thank you to all parents and boosters for your support at the Sunset finals and for the entire season. We really appreciate all the extra things that you do for the athletes. Because of you we are able to have the success that was exhibited at league finals. As a program we have now won 8 straight varsity league titles in either boys or girls CC with numerous lower level championships. As the finals showed, FVHS won 4 of 6 league team titles and finished 2nd in the final standings for the boys Varsity and frosh soph teams. We look forward with great anticipation to the upcoming post season of running and will try to make FVHS proud with hopefully yet another appearance in the state finals for the girls and possibly a first time appearance by the boys. As a reminder to all parents, the soph,Jr, and Sr boys will train with the Varsity until the season is over. Any freshman boy or girl on the Varsity travel squad will remain exempt from zero period until the season in over. All frehman not continuing on will report back to zero period on Monday Nov 5th unless in a winter sport.
GO BARONS!!

| Sunset League Review - De ja vu again? |
10/30/2007 |
The year was 2006 and the varsity girls raced Edison to a tie in the Sunset League Finals. It came down to our sixth place runner, Laura Wells, to break the tie and give the Barons the Sunset League title.
Fast forward to 2007 and the varsity girls raced Esperanza to a tie in the Sunset League finals. It came down to our sixth place runner yet again. But, this year it was Kim Sherman who broke the tie and gave the Barons their 4th consecutive Sunset League title.
To quote coach Migliorini "We ran well and reacted when we had to. Our team has worked very hard, and I beleive that we are capable of running against anyone."
It just goes to show that you can be the first or seventh runner for the Barons to cross the finish line; every second and every place counts. Congratulations to the girls varsity on their 4th consecutive Sunset League title and yet another trip to CIF Prelims.
The girls times are as follows...

| Arciniaga Olympic Update |
10/19/2007 |
Message sent from Rick Arciniaga...
To Family and Friends,
About a year ago, my son Nicholas ran his one and only marathon and qualified for the Olympic Trials. Well, guess what, that big day is approaching very soon. On Saturday, .November 3, 2007 in New York City,
Not to be confused with the New York Marathon, this race is limited to approximately 160 competitors who have met the minimum standard time for competition. As of this week, his time of 2 hours 16 minutes and 58 seconds ranks him #27 in the United States.
In the recent issue of Running Times magazine under the heading DARK HORSES, the following was written:
Almost every Olympic trials marathon produces at least one surprise podium finisher, someone who runs from the outskirts of reality to earn an Olympic team berth. Given the fickle nature of the marathon and the depth of this year’s field, there’s a good chance an unsung runner will emerge in New York, too. There are more than a dozen runners with the talent and the training to finish in the top three, but, it will likely come from down to who’s the hungriest dog. “The trials have a weird way of shaking things out”, “but there’s always someone in there that no one expected.”
Who might that be this year? Nick Arciniaga, Michael Reneau, Fasil Bizuneh, Steve Meinelt, and Joe Discrolli are among those to keep an eye on, either because they’re still young or relatively inexperienced in the marathon.
Just a little background, Nick completed his one and only Marathon last October and as a result, qualified to compete in New York. Shortly thereafter, he was recruited by the Hanson brothers to join their organization and with that, Nick moved to Michigan to join the Hanson Brooks Original Distance Project. The sole aim of HBODP is train young runners to be the best marathon runners they can be and be competitive in the world arena. At the last Olympic Trials, their runners finished 4th, 5th, and 13th and they are all back again to compete along with Nick and 10 other teammates.
Nicks’ most recent race was this past May where he finished 9th in USA 25K Championships (15.5 miles). Since July, all he does Run, eat, sleep, work a little, Run, eat, sleep. He is running a bit over 120 miles a week and his training is going very well. He sounds very confident and says if he runs a perfect race, you never know.
In order to be selected to compete in the Olympic Games, Nick will need to finish in the top 3 and run in under 2 hours and 15 minutes.
To learn more about the upcoming marathon and get and idea of what Nick is up to or who the main competition and pre-race favorites, check out the following sites:
This site is the home page of the Men’s Olympic Trials Marathon. This features stories, video snippets, who is running, the course and other information including the results

| California Girls Division 1 Ranking Are Out... |
08/23/2007 |
Dyestat has posted the rankings and Fountain Valley Girls start the season ranked 3rd!!!
Congratualtions to both Fountain Valley and Esperanza for making the list. Looks like another tough year in the Sunset League...
See details below...
1. Saugus (Southern) -- Katie Dunn is in sensational shape while Amber Murakami carefully rebounds from the anemia which surfaced earlier this year. The Scorpions are VERY deep and well prepared, so any avoidance of surprise setbacks should net Saugus a second successive state title.
2. Crescenta Valley, La Crescenta (Southern) -- This program has excelled on the boys side for years, but the girls rolled into prominence last fall and are even better this year. Claire Collison and Rachel Lange afford the Falcons the top 1-2 punch in the division.
3. Fountain Valley (Southern) -- Lizzy Coe will miss a majority of the season due to recovering from a stress fracture, but high-mileage Barons have Nicole Giove leading a solid crew. Not as deep as years past, so FV will need to say healthy.
4. Torrey Pines (San Diego) -- Rivaling Saugus for the best front-running trio in the division, Torrey Pines should run away with the section title. The addition of a raw but talented newcomer to the Megan Morgan-Erin Gillingham-Ana Prim attack make the San Diego powerhouse a likely podium placer for a second consecutive year.
5. San Clemente (Southern) -- Orange County's most improved program these days should continue the fasttrack beat to Fresno with Alex Dunne leading everyone back from last year's team that placed 8th in state. One exceptional frontrunner and six that can interchange are an awfully potent combination.
6. Serrano, Phelan (Southern) -- Defending CIF-SS individual champion Kauren Tarver and younger sibling Skyler are among seven returnees with postseason experience for a group seeking improved depth in order to hold off the rest of the Southern Section charge.
7. Davis (Sac-Joaquin) -- Laurynne Chetelat enjoyed her breakthrough late last season which then carried into USATF Nationals in Colorado in February. Jonah Weeks, an additional pair of veterans and a fine newcomer have this crew with plenty of upside if the ladies take care of duty in practices.
8. Buchanan (Central) -- Even with the four-year backbone of the program (Lauren Saylor) having graduated, the Bears appear to be anything but spineless. Sue Choi and Chelsea Jensen are among five returnees for Buchanan, which is favored to win over a deep Central Section field this year.
9. Esperanza, Anaheim (Southern) -- The Aztecs earned an at-large bid into CIF-SS Prelims from the powerful Sunset League, then rode the newfound life to a ninth-place finish at the state (yes, all four postseason teams from the league advanced to state). Tiana Franzetti, Teeny Adams an Keena Kohl leads six postseason returnees.
10. Corona (Southern) -- Ashley Evans leads one of the best trios in the Southern Section as six return from a squad seeking to make it to the big dance this fall. Special honorable mention: Dana Hills, which endured a major off-day at CIF-SS Prelims last year, still has a loaded lineup. Girls, if you still needed any motivation, perhaps this will help supply it
| Giove Breaks school record for Career Mileage |
08/20/2007 |
Nicole Giove broke FVHS cross country’s most coveted record …
The Career Summer Mileage Record. With just over 2 weeks to go in her senior summer Giove passed the mark former Footlocker All-American Crystal Reed 2925. Not only has Giove broken the record, but she becomes the first Baron to run 3000 miles in her career. Fountain Valley is known for its high mileage, and to be the hardest working of a group that includes dozens of collegiate runners, two high school All-Americans, and two athletes who have qualified for the upcoming Olympic trials, is quite an honor. Giove first gained notoriety on the dyestat message boards as a freshman when she ran 44miles the last day of summer to narrowly win the Angie Winkler award, given to the freshman who runs the most mileage during the summer. Giove has been a mainstay and key varsity ingredient on teams that have won a CIF title, two CIF runner-ups, and earned a berth to NTN. Giove was voted by her peers Captain in last years team election. |
